Biden’s Nominees for SBA and Commerce Must be Strong Voices for Main Street During the Biggest Small Business Crisis of Our Lifetime

Statement by Rhett Buttle, senior advisor to Small Business for America’s Future and former national business advisor at Biden for President. Buttle is available for comment.

Washington, D.C., Jan. 7, 2020—We congratulate Commerce Secretary nominee Gov. Gina Raimondo, Small Business Administration Administrator nominee Isabel Guzman, Deputy Commerce Secretary nominee Don Graves and the rest of the high-caliber people nominated to serve on President-elect Joe Biden’s economic team.

I've had the pleasure of working with both Isabel and Don in particular over the course of several years and can’t speak highly enough about their work ethic and commitment to America’s entrepreneurs. We are eager to work with them to help small business owners survive, recover, and thrive during this challenging time.

America’s 30 million small businesses are a crucial component of the nation’s economy, employing nearly half of all workers, providing valuable goods and services, and creating economic activity in our communities. We’re sure this team will be the strong advocate entrepreneurs need during the biggest crisis they have faced in our lifetime.

After the Great Recession, small businesses led our economic recovery by creating nearly two-thirds of new private sector jobs. Small businesses can once again lead us out of an economic crisis–but only with strong leadership in Washington providing them with the tools they need to survive.

Most small business owners also believe the pandemic will impact business well into 2021; the SBA administrator and commerce secretary will play crucial roles in executing the policies that will help small business owners survive the pandemic and thrive in the future. After four years of an administration that put the needs of big business first, we are encouraged to see President-elect Biden give small businesses the leadership and help they deserve. We welcome an opportunity to discuss small business priorities with the new SBA administrator and commerce secretary.
