SC Small Business Owners Applaud Administration’s Investment in Expanding High-Speed Internet

SC small business owners in the Small Business for America’s Future network react to Vice President Kamala Harris’s visit to Columbia, SC

Columbia, S.C., Feb. 27, 2023— Today, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to an audience of business leaders in Columbia about the administration’s actions to ensure high-speed internet is accessible to everyone.

Reliable, affordable high-speed internet is a critical tool for small business owners. More than $132 million in funding from the American Rescue Act will be spent to expand broadband access in South Carolina.

Here’s what South Carolina small business owners are saying about Vice President Kamala Harris’s visit:

“The pandemic showed us just how important access to reliable high-speed internet is for small business ownership and how many people did not have it, especially at home. It's good to know that this important resource—which can set a level playing field—will be available to many more people regardless of where they live.”

Kenzie Biggins
Founder & CEO of Worxbee Inc.
Greenville, South Carolina

“It's great to see policy out of Washington that is helping to fix a major problem in rural areas. Investing in broadband will cut the digital divide and help small businesses succeed. Customers are online and small businesses need to be able to meet them where they are.”
Marilyn Hemingway
CEO & President
Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce
Georgetown, South Carolina

“The pandemic showed how important internet access is to a company’s bottom line and resilience. I am pleased to see that our leaders are taking action to make sure every small business has access to high-speed internet. Rural small business owners should have access to the same technology that enables success as the rest of us.”

Bailey Lewis
Owner of Words First Content Strategy
Columbia, South Carolina

"The pandemic forever changed how we work – high-speed internet is essential for businesses, communities, and workers to prosper in the modern economy. I can think of no more critical investment to make to close gaps of equity and support rural communities than these smart efforts to expand high-speed internet access."

Evelyn Lugo

President of the South Carolina Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Taylors, South Carolina
