Small Business Group: SCOTUS Vote Shows Senate Republicans’ Priorities Don’t Lie with the Economy or Small Business

Statement by Anne Zimmerman, Co-chair of Small Business for America’s Future and a small business CPA based in Cincinnati, Ohio

Washington, D.C., Oct. 26, 2020—Calling off negotiations over economic relief and focusing on filling a Supreme Court vacancy shows a shocking disregard for the needs of the 30 million American small business owners who create jobs and drive economic activity in all our communities. Yet, the Trump Administration wants to pretend the virus isn’t a threat and Senate Republicans have abandoned Main Streets to their fate. The economic fallout could be disastrous.

national Small Business for America's Future survey of 1,500 small business owners this month found that 66% of small business owners thought passing an economic relief package was more important to the future of the country than approving a Supreme Court nominee.

Main Street entrepreneurs have been stretched to their financial limits by the Covid-19 pandemic. The survey found that 15% of small businesses won’t make it past the end of the month without further economic relief and 34% say they won't make it past the end of 2020. Nineteen percent are considering bankruptcy and 28% have considered closing their business permanently.

Our survey shows that 98% of small business owners plan to vote in this election and they will take note of the lawmakers who put party over country today when they put containing the virus and helping small businesses and the economy at the bottom of their priority list.
