Sen. Toomey must focus on providing much-needed relief for small business and their employees rather than throwing up obstacles to its passage

Statement by Walter Rowen, member of the Small Business for America’s Future Small Business Advisory Council and owner of Susquehanna Glass Company in Columbia, PA

Washington, D.C., Dec. 18, 2020—Main street needs relief now. In the middle of a pandemic when a vaccine is being deployed, it doesn’t make sense to shut down the government. Furthermore, it’s dismaying to see Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey propose unreasonable conditions on the Fed’s emergency lending that could jeopardize a $900 billion bipartisan relief package that will deliver much-needed support for small businesses and ordinary Americans.

Political gamesmanship has already delayed crucial relief for far too long and our small businesses and their employees are suffering as a result. Though this relief package does not go nearly far enough, it is better than nothing and it can not be jeopardized by proposals, like Sen. Toomey’s, that are designed to restrict how the government can respond during this economic crisis.

Small businesses are in dire trouble right now and can’t wait for aid. A November national survey of more than 1,000 small businesses in Small Business for America’s Future’s network found 39% of small business owners say that they won’t make it past the end of the year without further financial assistance.

I urge Sen. Toomey and everyone in Congress to stop playing with the fate of entrepreneurs across the country and immediately provide Main Street small business owners and their employees the financial help they need to get through what is sure to be a long, hard winter.

If they don’t, many small businesses will fail, taking jobs with them and weakening our economic recovery.
