Small business group applauds economic policies helping Main Street thrive, urges lawmakers to avoid default and raise debt ceiling

Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Anne Zimmerman reacts to President Joe Biden’s recent speech on the economy

Accokeek, MD, April 20, 2023– It was good to hear about President Biden’s commitment to small businesses during his speech in Maryland, Wednesday.

There’s no question the impact small businesses are having on our economy and are driving growth and job creation. A recent analysis credits small businesses for all net job growth in the U.S. since the pandemic began. They account for nearly four out of every five current job openings.

Combine that with the recent entrepreneurial boom with over 10.4 million new small businesses created since 2021, Main Street is helping to bolster our economy. However, in order for this trend to continue, small business owners need policy that prioritizes them, not just big corporations. They should not be an afterthought.

Policies like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law create new contracting opportunities for small businesses while repairing our nation’s crumbling infrastructure. This key economic legislation is proof lawmakers from opposite sides of the aisle can work together to better support the people they serve.

It's our hope they remember that cooperation during upcoming debt ceiling negotiations, which should not get bogged down in partisan politics. The focus needs to solely be on preventing a default and reducing harm to working families. As small business owners vividly recall from the last time the debt ceiling got politicized, protracted debate on this issue can cause higher borrowing costs for businesses and home buyers, and spark immense volatility in the stock market and significantly damage consumer confidence and spending.

Small business owners have weathered the pandemic, supply chain shortages, inflation, and myriad other unpredictable obstacles caused by  Covid-19. We should avoid  putting them through the entirely predictable economic fallout of a self-inflicted wound that will come from a protracted debate over whether the nation will honor its debts.
