Small business group applauds new rule aimed at increasing competition in the healthcare industry, lowering prescription drugs prices for Main Street

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Dr. Erica Gonzalez on latest move by the Biden-Harris Administration to make healthcare more affordable

Nov. 6, 2023--“We are encouraged by the latest rule proposed by the Biden-Harris Administration that addresses rising healthcare costs, a top concern for small businesses owners.

“This new rule tackles prescription drugs, a major driver of healthcare costs, by ensuring Medicare enrollees receive a fair shot at affordable prices. Under the rule agents and brokers will receive a standard fee for all plans to keep them from favoring certain plans because they pay higher commissions.

“Small business owners have named the high cost of healthcare, and prescription drugs in particular, as one of the top issues they face because it cuts into their bottom lines and hinders their ability to grow and attract quality employees.

“The Inflation Reduction Act, by empowering  Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices, is already expected to drive down prices for enrollees and put downward pressure on drug costs overall. This new proposed rule will give more muscle to the fight to lower prices.

“Affordable healthcare boosts the financial health of small business owners and bolsters our economy. We hope this proposed rule will continue to garner support.”
