Small Business Group Encouraged by Biden’s Town Hall Statements Promising Strong Oversight of Small Business Relief

Statement by Renee Johnson, Small Business for America’s Future Senior Advisor, on President Biden’s promise to provide stronger oversight to small business relief

Washington, D.C., Feb. 17, 2021—We were encouraged to hear President Biden promise a small business owner during a town hall in Wisconsin on Tuesday that his administration will provide strong oversight to ensure the relief in the American Rescue Plan intended for “mom and pop” small businesses gets to them rather than large corporations.

With 40% of the original Paycheck Protection Program funds intended for small businesses going to multi-million dollar corporations, we were glad to hear the president vow to have inspectors general ensure that would not happen with the $60 billion allocated for small business capital investments and relief in the American Rescue Plan.

This kind of oversight and dedication to addressing small business needs is a welcome and long-awaited change. The previous administration’s handling of small business pandemic relief was marred by incompetence that left the most vulnerable small businesses behind while enriching large companies that did not need assistance to survive.

Most small business owners expect the economic impacts of the pandemic to reverberate well into 2021. It’s gratifying to know our leaders now understand their pain and are working to help.

We hope the president delivers on his promises and Congress passes the relief legislation, as it will be a strong step to helping our small businesses survive and rebuild.
