Small business group: House Passage of Build Back Better Act a victory for small business owners

Small Business for America’s Future applauds the House passing the Build Back Better Act and urges swift action from the Senate

Washington, D.C., Nov. 19, 2021—The passage of the Build Back Better Act through the House of Representatives is a victory for America’s small business community. The legislation delivers much-needed investment in the American economy that will create a healthier and more competitive Main Street. We urge the Senate to pass this important bill without delay and deliver it to the president to sign into law his signature.

“Small business owners are the backbone of the nation's economy—driving economic growth and job creation. Investments in healthcare, affordable child care, paid leave, access to capital through the Small Business Administration and Minority Business Development Agency by the Build Back Better Act will deliver what we need to build a healthy and thriving Main Street,” said Shaundell Newsome, Founder of Sumnu Marketing in Las Vegas, NV, and Co-Chair of Small Business for America’s Future. “Additionally, this legislation takes an important step in leveling the playing field on taxes by establishing a global minimum tax on large corporations and ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share. Though we have more work to do, we applaud the House for passing the plan, and strongly urge the Senate to do the same.”

Small business owners agree: The Build Back Better Act and its key provisions will help reinvigorate an economy rebuilding from the Covid-19 pandemic. In Small Business for America’s Future’s most recent national survey of more than 1,000 small business owners, 74% said it was important for Congress and the Biden administration to continue economic investments amid the lingering effects of the pandemic. Additionally, many of the key provisions included in the bill enjoy strong support from small business owners, including:

  • 91% support increasing investment in affordable care for aging people and people with disabilities
  • 85% support guaranteeing affordable childcare for working parents
  • 87% of small business owners support the proposed provision in the reconciliation framework that would allow the Small Business Administration to make loans under $150,000 directly to small business owners who cannot get them from other lenders

The same survey showed that the small business community is prepared to make their voices heard at the ballot box if this legislation isn’t passed:

  • 64% said they would be less likely to vote for lawmakers who oppose the Build Back Better Act
  • 83% said lawmakers’ support for Medicare negotiation of drug prices will be important to their vote in the 2022 midterm elections (including 58% saying it is very important)
