Small Business Group: Senate Field Hearing in Georgia Is a Powerful Message for Protecting Voting Rights

Statement by Dr. Erika Gonzalez, Co-Chair of Small Business for America’s Future and Chairwoman of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Washington, D.C., July 20, 2021—Yesterday’s historic field hearing on voting rights held by the Senate Rules Committee in Georgia sends a powerful message to activists across the country that our leaders in Washington are listening. The hearing, which focused on restrictive changes to Georgia’s voting laws earlier this year, shines a light on the kinds of dangerous legislation being introduced and passed all across the country.

We applaud the Senate Rules Committee for taking the time to visit those working hard on the ground to protect our democracy, and they should know they have Main Street on their side as well. Business owners agree: a thriving economy relies on a healthy democracy. A recent Small Business for American’s Future (SBAF) survey this May found that 74% of small business owners surveyed support lawmakers taking action to protect and expand voting rights.

We hope this is the first step to continued congressional action to protect our right to vote, and Small Business for America’s Future is ready to support lawmakers willing to stand with our small business community.
