Small Business Group: Strong Job Report Indicates Progress on Economy, Still More Work to do to Help Small Business Thrive

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Senior Advisor Rhett Buttle in response to February jobs report showing the economy added 678,000 jobs

Washington, D.C., March 4, 2022—Today’s jobs report showing the economy added 678,000 jobs in February and more people entered the labor force is a welcome sign of economic progress, but we still must do more to help Main Street small businesses recover from the biggest shock they’ve experienced in a century.

We’re hopeful that more people entering the workforce will increase the ability for businesses to provide goods and services, therefore cooling inflation. Still, we can do more to help small businesses ramp up operations by addressing the fact that women were taken out of the workforce during the pandemic, largely due to the lack of affordable childcare. The impact on Main Street, which is struggling to fill jobs, is real and we echo the president’s call during the State of the Union to pass common-sense childcare legislation that would help control costs.

We also need to help small businesses with unreasonable expenses that cut into their bottom line and hinder their growth. Chief among those is the exorbitant cost of healthcare. In survey after survey, small business owners identify the cost of healthcare and prescription drug prices as their top concern and strongly support solutions like allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs. Yet, despite many promises from Congress to address this problem, the pharmaceutical industry continues to charge astronomical prices for needed medicine. It is well past time for action on this fundamental problem holding back small business success.

To maximize our economic recovery, we must seize opportunities to enact policies that help our small business community, which creates two-thirds of all new jobs and employs half of all workers, succeed. With the proper policies in place, America’s small businesses will flourish and lead our economy to prosperity.
