Small Business Group: Confirmation of Robert Califf as Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Good News for Small Business

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Senior Advisor Rhett Buttle on today’s Senate confirmation of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf

Washington, D.C., Feb. 15, 2022— We applaud the Senate’s bipartisan confirmation of Dr. Robert Califf as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner because his commitment to lowering the price of prescription drugs will help address one of the most pressing issues facing small businesses—soaring healthcare costs.

Small business owners have been concerned about the rising cost of prescription drugs for years, and surveys repeatedly show small business owners identify the cost of healthcare and prescription drug prices as their top concern. However, the pharmaceutical industry continues to charge exorbitant amounts for needed medicine—burdening patients, workers, and employers with prices that are nearly three times what people in comparable nations pay. This trend is harmful to entrepreneurs across the country and is a barrier to small business growth for America’s Main Street.

We are optimistic that Califf’s leadership on the cost of prescription drugs at the FDA will help support our small business community, which creates two-thirds of all new jobs and employs half of all workers.
