Small business group: White House engagement with private sector on the on human infrastructure investments is encouraging

Statement by Renee Johnson, senior advisor to Small Business for America’s Future on the vice president’s meeting today with business leaders about the care economy

Washington, D.C., August 12, 2021—Small Business for America’s Future was encouraged to see Vice President Harris engage with business leaders today about investing in human infrastructure and the care economy through child care, paid family and medical leave and long-term care policies. The meeting preceded Small Business for America’s Future’s event with Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh discussing how investments in the care economy help small businesses.

Small business owners are the backbone of the nation’s economy, driving economic growth and job creation. As we recover from the devastating economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, small businesses will take a central role in getting our communities back to work. The Biden Administration’s Build Back Better Agenda proposes significant investments in child care, paid family and medical leave, and long-term care to ensure the workforce has adequate resources and care for their families. These proposals will help small businesses avoid lost  productivity and growth caused  when workers are forced to take time away or leave their jobs because of a lack of affordable care options.

Congress has the support of the small business community for making this happen. A recent Small Business for America’s Future’s survey of over 1,000 small business owners showed broad support for investments in the care economy. The results included 87% of small business owners supporting investments in long-term care for aging people and people with disabilities, 70% supporting paid family and medical leave and 75% supporting increased investments in child care.

We look forward to continuing to engage with policy makers to deliver desperately needed support for small business owners.
