STATEMENT: Small Business Group Applauds Efforts to Help Main Street Through Economic Policies

Statement by members of the Small Business for America’s Future network in reaction to recent economic policies and President Biden’s speech in Virginia

Jan. 26, 2023–Small business owners reacted favorably to President Joe Biden’s economic speech today and felt the announcement of the Invest in America Cabinet shows a welcome commitment to helping small businesses and the economy.

They are also voicing their support for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, which have helped small businesses navigate the unpredictable economic climate.

Main Street was rocked by the pandemic and many entrepreneurs are fighting for survival. Economic policies shepherded by the administration—from laws addressing the cost of high prescription drugs to historic investments in repairing our crumbling infrastructure—are helping small businesses recover and create new jobs.

In fact, today’s GDP report showed six months of solid economic growth. During the last quarter, the GDP expanded by nearly 3%.

Many small business owners also urged policymakers to stay the course to recovery rather than pursuing radical measures that could disrupt the economy, like abolishing the IRS, installing a 30% national sales tax and instigating an unnecessary fight over raising the debt ceiling.

Here’s what small business leaders are saying about recent economic policies.

“Small businesses like mine have gotten a lot of needed support from our leaders in DC. Investments in our infrastructure and laws tackling expenses, like healthcare prices, that affect the bottom line, are exactly what our country needs. This is not time for our leaders to go off the rails pursuing radical economic policies that would jeopardize our recovery.”

Joe Reddix, President and CEO of The Reddix Group, Hanover, MD

“I am happy with the progress our country has made in supporting small businesses and promoting economic growth. Policies like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law prove that success can be achieved when lawmakers with different views work together. That said, I’m concerned that Congress may not keep its focus on small business and instead turn to an economically damaging fight over the debt ceiling. We need our leaders to keep focusing on improving the economy and providing resources for small business owners.”

Paul Branner, owner of Georgetown Butchers, Georgetown, DC

“The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law have been very important to small businesses. Both work to create new jobs, allow cost-effective innovation and provide economic opportunities to entrepreneurs, which helps everyone. Congress needs to continue to invest in programs that will help the bottom line of businesses like mine and allow us to be competitive in the labor market. Let’s not get distracted by the politics of division and instead keep the focus on passing laws that help small businesses and families.”

Connie Mazur, owner of CyberVillage Networkers, Inc., Elliot City, MD
