STATEMENT: Small Business Owners Expresses Some Relief as Congress Avoids Government Shutdown, but Urge Long-Term Stability

Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Shaundell Newsome and small business owners across the country express some relief that Congress avoided a shutdown at the last minute, while decrying the path it took to reach this point

Washington, D.C., Sept. 30, 2023— “While we are relieved the government avoided a shutdown, it is disheartening that it was pushed to this point. The unneeded uncertainty weighed heavily on small businesses. We are the backbone of our nation’s economy, and  a shutdown would have had harmful economic consequences for us.

“Small Business for America’s Future's latest survey highlights the concerns small business owners have around a disruption in the government. A resounding 78% of small business owners believe a government shutdown would negatively impact the economy and small businesses. This concern is notable amid positive economic signs, like record low unemployment and stable inflation rates.

“Small business owners found themselves caught in the crossfire as lawmakers debated the federal budget, forcing them into another cycle of stress and uncertainty they cannot afford. It is our hope that moving forward, Congress will take steps to prevent this kind of political brinkmanship and ensure that small businesses' economic health is not jeopardized in future budget negotiations.”
