STATEMENT: Small business owners relieved by plan to avert government shutdown but urge lawmakers to pass long-term federal budget 



Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Shaundell Newsome, Founder of Sumnu Marketing, reacting to the passage of a stopgap bill to keep the government funded into the near year 

Washington D.C, Nov. 16, 2023– “While we are glad Congress decided to keep the government open, this  pattern of narrowly avoiding government shutdowns through last-minute short-term fixes is ineffective and unsettling for small business owners. We are urging lawmakers to prioritize a long-term budgetary strategy that supports and strengthens Main Street small businesses and bolsters our economy. 

“The need for a stable and predictable government is critical for small businesses. The frequent use of short-term spending plans is a source of stress and uncertainty especially for the dedicated small business owners who utilize their expertise to support the government through subcontract work. 

“There’s also concern about the impact a shutdown could have on the economy as shown in a recent survey from Small Business for America’s Future. Seventy-eight percent of small business owners said they were concerned about the impact of a government shutdown on the economy and small businesses.

“Moving forward, it is our hope that Congress will actively avoid political games and ensure that the economic well-being of small businesses is not at risk in the latest round of budget negotiations. A stable, long-term financial plan is crucial for the health and growth of small businesses, which are an integral part of our economy.”
