Small business group: Lowering healthcare costs will boost Main Street

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Anne Zimmerman, Founder & Owner of  Zimmerman & Co. CPAs comments on Health and Human Services Secretary  Xavier Becerra's visit to Ohio

July 6, 2023--Skyrocketing healthcare costs have been a burden for small business owners for years, hindering growth and digging into their bottom lines. It’s great to see Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra discuss what the Biden administration is doing to address rising costs.

We desperately need it here in Ohio with more than 743,000 people uninsured, likely because it's too expensive. A Small Business for America’s Future survey showed four in ten small business owners are not offering health insurance, and nearly 80% said it was because the cost was too high. This can affect their ability to attract and retain employees.

However, policies like the Inflation Reduction Act are  tackling high prescription drug costs. The policy includes a provision that requires drugmakers to offer rebates for charging prices that rise faster than inflation for people on Medicare. This month, the administration again acted to rein in costs and recipients could see savings on 43 more prescription drugs including medications for cancer and arthritis.

We hope lawmakers in Washington build on the success of this legislation and do more to help Main Street thrive.
