Small Business for America’s Future Commends Confirmation of Xavier Becerra to Head Health and Human Services

Statement by Rhett Buttle, senior advisor to Small Business for America’s Future and former Director of Private Sector Engagement in the Office of the Secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services

Washington, D.C., March 18, 2021—The Senate’s confirmation today of Xavier Becerra as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services is good news for small business owners who want to continue to build on the progress of the Affordable Care Act, ensure health equity in vaccine distribution and work with policy makers to bring relief from healthcare costs.

Small Business for America’s Future’s new national survey of small business owners finds the cost of providing health insurance to their employees is the biggest challenge small business owners face—even ahead of the challenges associated with Covid-19. Small business owners overwhelmingly want government action to relieve the burden and strongly support a broad array of policy solutions.

Having worked in the Department of Health and Human Services in the Obama Administration, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is for small businesses and their employees to have a strong leader who will be an advocate for their needs. Mr. Becerra has shown himself to be just such an advocate. As attorney general of California, for example, he fought for the preservation of access to the Affordable Care Act as the Trump Administration tried to dismantle the law.

We look forward to working with Mr. Becerra to advance healthcare policy solutions that will strengthen small business and provide security to our entrepreneurs and their employees.
