President Continues to Cause Economic Damage to Small Businesses and Their Workers

Statement by Renée Johnson, Small Business for America’s Future Senior Advisor

Washington, D.C., Dec. 28, 2020—By needlessly delaying the signing of $900 billion in economic relief into law, President Trump harmed millions of small business owners and caused misery for ordinary Americans in desperate need of immediate economic help.

We support the larger relief checks that President Trump was demanding, but we doubt his sincerity. If he truly cared, he would have gotten involved in creating the bill weeks ago rather than spending his time complaining about losing the election and leaving the negotiations to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Instead, in what has been a hallmark of his administration, the president created chaos at the 11th hour by allowing jobless benefits to expire, playing a dangerous game of chicken with the fate of small businesses, and risking a damaging government shutdown.

We are nine months into the devastating Covid-19 pandemic and GOP leaders must stop playing political games with critical legislation that supports workers and their families. It’s important our leaders recognize the ongoing hardship they are facing because the current bill is only a stopgap measure and much more must be done once President-elect Biden takes office to help our economy and small businesses fully recover.

We sincerely hope our leaders in Washington will stop playing politics with the fates of our entrepreneurs and economy, and prioritize the needs of small businesses and their employees now and in the future.
