SBA Administrator Isabel Guzman will be a Strong Voice for Main Street Small Businesses

Statement by Rhett Buttle, senior advisor to Small Business for America’s Future and former national business advisor at Biden for President, on today’s Senate confirmation of Isabel Guzman as administrator of the Small Business Administration

Washington, D.C., March 16, 2021—Today’s Senate confirmation of Isabel Guzman as administrator of the Small Business Administration is good news for America’s Main Street entrepreneurs. She will be a strong small business champion during the biggest small business crisis of our lifetime.

I've had the pleasure of working with Isabel and can’t speak highly enough of her work ethic and commitment to America’s small business owners. We are eager to work with her to help Main Street entrepreneurs during this challenging time, particularly as she helps implement the small business relief programs included in the American Rescue Plan (ARP). The ARP, which contains  grants and capital for small businesses and stimulus payments for small business customers, is very popular with small business owners and is crucial for an economic recovery that will help Main Street small businesses rebuild.

In addition, we urge Guzman to champion other important small business issues including:

  • Continue simplifying the forgiveness process for Paycheck Protection Program and equitably implement new programs in the American Rescue Plan
  • Correcting market failures that have resulted in unbearably high healthcare costs and create affordable options for entrepreneurs and their employees. Ninety-two percent of small business owners we have surveyed say policymakers need to prioritize bringing down healthcare costs.
  • Common-sense tax policies that put small businesses on a level playing field with large corporations and correcting the failures of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
  • Creating programs that promote the economic security of small businesses by addressing universal small business problems that make them less competitive with big business. Access to capital in particular was a top concern for small business owners.

America’s 30 million small businesses are a crucial component of the nation’s economy, employing nearly half of all workers, providing valuable goods and services, and creating economic activity in our communities. The SBA administrator will play a crucial role in executing the policies that will help these invaluable small business owners survive the pandemic and thrive in the future.

If we are going to have a strong economic recovery, we need a strong small business recovery. Administrator Guzman understands this and we are confident she has the expertise required to get the job done.
