Small Business Group: Lawmakers Must Pass Expanded Child Tax Credit Before Year’s End to Keep Main Street Economic Gains Going

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-Chair Anne Zimmerman, Founder & Owner, Zimmerman & Co. CPAs and Treasurer of Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce in Cincinnati, on urgent need to include child tax credit in year end package

Washington, D.C., Dec. 13, 2022—The small business economy is showing signs of positive momentum as inflation continues to slow, new business starts are strong, gas prices decline, small business optimism increases, and recession fears begin to ebb. Now is the time for lawmakers to enact policies, like the expanded Child Tax Credit, that address hiring challenges and allow Main Street to flourish.

Finding workers remains a challenge for many small business owners but revived negotiations over extending the Child Tax Credit gives lawmakers an excellent opportunity to help change that. This is a solution that most small business owners say will work and support. A survey from a diverse coalition of the country’s leading small business groups including Small Business for America’s Future found that 62% of small business owners say the flexibility and predictability of the expanded Child Tax Credit allows parents to increase expenditures on things like home-and family-based child care, which benefits small businesses that need workers with stable schedules. More than half said the credits make it easier for working families to get back to work and a majority support extending them.

The bottom line is that expanded Child Tax Credit payments put money into the economy and help create stability for the workforce on which small businesses rely by enabling workers to pay for necessities like child care. Small business owners are the backbone of the nation's economy, driving economic growth and job creation. The Child Tax Credit is an investment that will benefit Main Street business owners and their employees, and we hope our lawmakers act fast and address this pressing issue.
