Small Business Group Applauds Inclusion of Election Count Act In End-Of-Year Omnibus Bill; Disappointed Child Tax Credit Was Dropped

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-Chair Shaundell Newsome reacting to the passage of the year-end spending omnibus bill

Washington, D.C., Dec. 23, 2022— We applaud lawmakers for passing an omnibus spending bill to fund the government for the next fiscal year that includes measures to protect our democracy. We are disappointed, however, that they missed the opportunity to expand the Child Tax Credit, which would have provided stability for millions of workers and boosted the small business labor pool.

The inclusion of the Election Count Act in the omnibus bill will strengthen our democratic process against anyone who tries to subvert a presidential election and it has economic benefits. Small business owners understand that we can’t have a strong economy without a strong democracy, which is why 76% of them supported Congress passing the Electoral Count Reform Act.

We are seeing positive signs in our economy with strong new business starts, declines in gas prices and an increase in small business optimism. To build on this momentum, we urge lawmakers, in the new legislative session, to continue pursuing policies that help small businesses grow.

We want to see our leaders revive negotiations for the enhanced Child Tax Credit and paid family leave, continue to tackle health insurance costs, and act to level the playing field on taxes between large and small businesses. Importantly, we also urge lawmakers not to play political games with the debt ceiling, which could send our fragile economy into a downward spiral.

Much was accomplished to help small businesses in 2022. In 2023, we hope our leaders choose to focus on policies that advance all of our economic fortunes rather than indulge in the harmful politics of petty grievances that pull us apart.
