Small Business Group Marks 2nd Anniversary of Capitol Riot Reminding Policymakers Of The Urgent Need to Protect Democracy

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-Chair Walt Rowen, President of Susquehanna Glass Co. on threats to democracy and the need to protect it.

Washington, D.C., Jan. 6, 2023— Today marks the second anniversary of a dark day in our nation's history when a violent mob attacked the Capital because they did not like the outcome of the presidential election.

The insurrection was an attack not just on American democracy, but on everything that democracy supports, including our shared economic prosperity. Eighty-nine percent of small business owners say a well-functioning democracy is very important to a strong small business economy. It provides the political stability that is needed for business owners to make informed decisions that allow them to grow and prosper.

Last month, lawmakers took steps to protect democracy by passing the Electoral Count Reform Act. It will help strengthen the vulnerabilities in the 19th century law, by strengthening our democratic process against those who try to subvert a presidential election.

However, there’s more work to be done as state legislatures across the country pass voter suppression laws and the legal battle in the Moore v. Harper case, centered on a theory that would challenge the democratic system of checks and balances, is under consideration by the Supreme Court.

In this new legislative session, policymakers need to learn from the integrity of leaders and regular citizens who had the courage to uphold the Constitution in 2020—like the 12 lawmakers, law enforcement officers, and election workers who will be awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal today for their role in defending the Capitol and resisting pressure to overturn the election—and focus on protecting American democracy.
