Small business group praises historic small business boom, policies that support innovation and growth

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Walt Rowen, President of Susquehanna Glass Company in Columbia, Pa. on historic three-year small business boom

Jan. 12, 2024– “Yesterday’s announcement that there have been 16 million new small business applications since 2021 demonstrates the power and importance of an economic climate and bipartisan legislation that supports growth and innovation on Main Street.

“This historic small business boom revitalized our economy after the pandemic with small businesses
leading the way in job creation.

“Policies like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act advance this positive momentum. The $400 billion
in investments in all 50 states announced so far, creates ample new opportunities for small businesses while repairing our nation's roads and bridges and strengthening our supply chains. The legislation opens up more tools and resources for  Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Black, Latino, and Native American entrepreneurs who were hit the hardest during the pandemic but are now rebounding by opening new businesses at the fastest rate in over 20 years. The number of Black entrepreneurs doubled and Latino business ownership is up by 40% since 2019.

“Just a little over a year old, another important law, the Inflation Reduction Act, is making important strides toward reining in healthcare costs by empowering Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices. It is projected to save $456 billion over a decade, freeing up vital resources for business growth and expansion.

“There’s also the CHIPS and Science ACT that breathed new life into the semiconductor industry that will help us become industry leaders by investing in research and development.

“We need more legislation like these laws to thrive.  As yet another government shutdown deadline approaches, we urge lawmakers to remember Main Street. Cuts to vital resources will be a roadblock to all of these new small businesses in need of resources to succeed.”
