Small business owners urge lawmakers to act swiftly and pass congressional budget agreement

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Anne Zimmerman,  Owner, of Zimmerman & Co CPAs Inc. about the congressional budget agreement that would avert a shutdown if passed on time.

Jan. 9, 2024 – “We are encouraged lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are making progress on an agreement to prevent a government shutdown that could have catastrophic consequences for small businesses and our economy. Small businesses continue to endure undue stress during what has become routine budget debates that cause uncertainty. We urge lawmakers to act swiftly and pass a budget that supports Main Street on time.

“While it’s disappointing the agreement moves up cuts to IRS funding included in the Inflation Reduction Act, we want lawmakers to avoid further cuts.  As small business owners we are beginning to see the benefits of large-scale investment into the IRS with significant improvements in customer service during the 2023 filing season. In order to maintain this positive momentum that can truly transform the agency it will need continued financial support—not cuts.

“Last week, small business owners from across the country signed on to a Small Business for America’s Future letter expressing their concern about how some lawmakers and their allies are misrepresenting and stoking fears about the impact the investment will have on small businesses.

“This funding is meant to provide the IRS with the additional staff and technology required to ensure taxpayers receive prompt and accurate customer service, while also more efficiently processing returns and refunds. To be clear it would not result in more audits for the middle-class and small businesses.

“As lawmakers prepare to vote on this agreement, we are urging them to remember the needs of small business owners.”
