State of the Union Reaction: Small business group applauds economic progress and focus on policies that will continue to build a stronger Main Street

Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Shaundell Newsome Founder of Sumnu Marketing reaction to the State of the Union and outlook on the economy

March 7, 2024 – “After hearing President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, I am encouraged by the progress we have made and the administration’s commitment to continue building an economy that supports small businesses. We have made significant strides forward over the last three years with record small business creation and low unemployment thanks to the supportive framework established by bipartisan efforts such as the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

“These policies have been pivotal in revitalizing our economy post-pandemic, highlighting the critical role of bipartisan support in fostering an environment for Main Street's prosperity. The continued promise to champion policies that nurture the growth and sustainability of small businesses is most welcome. However, we must build on this momentum to ensure a robust economic future for our nation.

“The Inflation Reduction Act has been a game-changer in leveling the playing field for entrepreneurs across the nation. Lowering healthcare prices, especially prescription drug costs has marked a significant step forward in making healthcare more affordable and accessible for small business owners and their employees. Eighty-one percent of small business owners support the Inflation Reduction Act’s measures to lower prescription drug prices. The legislation also includes a significant investment into the IRS to improve its technology and human power to make sure large corporations pay their fair share in taxes.

“As we look ahead, it’s crucial to recognize that a strong economy cannot exist without a strong democracy. Lawmakers must continue to work together to advance policies that prioritize the interests of small businesses and promote a vibrant economy. The path to a thriving economic future is through bipartisan innovative policies that cater to the needs of small businesses, the backbone of our economy.”
