STATEMENT: Small Business Group Applauds Biden Administration’s Prescription Drug Cost-Saving Measures

June 9, 2023—Today marks a big step forward as the Biden Administration announced that cost-saving measures in the Inflation Reduction Act have led to savings on 43 prescription drugs. Bringing down the costs of prescription drugs is essential for the bottom line of small businesses and the well-being of their owners and employees and it is gratifying to see results on a long-standing problem. 

For years, surveys have shown that small business owners identify the cost of healthcare and prescription drug prices as their top concern. The constant increases in the cost of life saving and life sustaining medications burdens patients, workers, and employers with prices that are nearly three times what people in comparable nations pay. This has real-world consequences for small businesses that affect the entire economy. A Small Business for America’s Future survey shows more than one in three business owners have raised prices on their goods and services to offset healthcare costs and nearly one in three have held off on hiring new employees.

While this is progress that will benefit small businesses and their employees across the country, lawmakers should not stop working to address prescription drug costs and the rising cost of healthcare. Together we can create a healthcare system that works for small businesses and ensures the well-being of their employees.
