STATEMENT: Small business group encouraged by administration’s focus on energizing the next generation of leaders

Statement by Small Business for America’s Future Co-chair Shaundell Newsome, founder of Sumnu Marketing and Small Business for America’s Future Council member Tiara Flynn  Founder of Phenomenal Mama on Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to the North Las Vegas campus of the College of Southern Nevada.

Las Vegas, NV, Oct. 12, 2023– It was great to hear Vice President Kamala Harris speak to young people about the importance of getting civically engaged. Getting engaged in our democratic process is the foundation of a stable democracy. As business owners we know that a strong democracy means a strong economy and a thriving small business sector.

Small business owners depend on a strong, inclusive, and trustworthy democracy that fosters stability, predictability, and accountability—the necessary ingredients for an environment where innovation and entrepreneurship can flourish. This sentiment was reflected in a Small Business for America’s Future survey. Seventy-three percent of respondents strongly agreed that ‘when a well-functioning democracy is under threat, there are negative implications for the nation’s economy that harm small business’.

It was encouraging to see so many young people energized and ready to get civically engaged. They are taking a stand for our democracy, a decision that shapes our nation and, in turn, the landscape in which our businesses operate.
